Loren Mellendorf, age 90 and resident of Sagewood, was a medic in WWII in the Rainbow Division which landed in France in late 1944. He was captured in early 1945 and held as a Prisoner of War for six months. As the war ended he was liberated but never received the medals he earned due to spending six months in a hospital. Seventy years later, he was recently presented with the medals by the Arizona National Guard and Senator John McCain at a ceremony held at Sagewood.
Loren’s wife, Pat, took up the task of putting in the request and with the help of Senator John McCain’s staff he was recently presented with the Prisoner of War Medal, the Good Conduct Medal, the American Theater Campaign Medal, the European, African and Middle Eastern Campaign Medal with two bronze service stars and the World War II Victory Medal.
