We have all met that person who talks a little too close to you and has something short of minty fresh breath. To keep your own breath agreeable to your friends and family there are some simple steps to remember.
Much of bad breath, called halitosis, stems from bacteria in our mouth. Proper oral hygiene, including regular flossing, brushing, and using a germ killing mouth rinse can help keep our bacteria levels low. Bacteria can also build up on our tongue, so it is important to clean your tongue with a toothbrush or a tongue scraper which can be purchased at most drug stores. Keeping your mouth well hydrated by drinking plenty of water has also been shown to decrease bacteria levels. Finally, avoiding certain foods (such as garlic and onions) and tobacco products will also improve your breath.
In some cases, halitosis may persist because of a condition that your dentist or physician needs to diagnosis and treat. Examples include gum disease, dry mouth, acid reflux and respiratory infections.
