2013 Trends for Your Home

By Suzan Ann

Who doesn’t like to be up on the latest styles or hot trends!  If you are bored to tears with your home, just moved or simply want to update the pillows on your sofa, let’s take a peek into what is being predicted for 2013!

Colors

The 2013 Pantone color of the year is, “Monaco Blue.” (#19-3964) It is not quite Navy or Cobalt Blue but more the color of Blueberries. Other colors predicted are the misty “liquid colors of the ocean, sea & air”. Picture the Blues, Greens, Grays of the water & sky along with grayed downed tones of Emerald & Jade. Now imagine the rich Blue-Purple tones of Twilight- Iris, Navy, Hyacinth, Wisteria & the Indigo. My personal favorite in this range is Periwinkle! It is a brighter shade of Blue-Purple that keeps changing with the light.  Beautiful in your bedroom! Regarding neutral colors – Think of the Sandy Browns of the beach as well as Burlap & Cappuccino. Other 2013 colors are – Butternut, Butter, Olive, Moss & Ivy Green, cool & warm Grays, Orangery- Reds & Black.

Wallpaper & Wall Decals

The days of dancing daisies with horse glue for paste are over! I have had a love affair with wallpaper for the last 15 years and it is Big! Many people are afraid of wallpaper but most wallpapers are pre-pasted and peel off when you spray them with water. If you choose Grass Cloth, highly Textured or Handmade Wallpaper a separate paste is necessary so removal is a bigger job.

I use wallpaper judiciously, usually on one wall in a room to add visual interest and movement. The before & after shots demonstrate a good example of this. A little known fact is your eye automatically looks to anything white first, will travel around a room and come back to rest on the largest block of white. The white in the wallpaper lifts your eyes off the floor creating a beautiful harmony of colors while adding a light & airy feeling to the room! Double duty!

Highly graphic wallpapers are predicted with the use of more neutral bedding and window treatments. Textured wallpaper is gorgeous in any room of the house. (Have you ever seen wallpaper made with clear beads? With changing light it is so visually stunning!) If you’re timid, start with a bathroom!

Wall Decals are not just for kids & teens anymore! Decals of chandeliers, birds, birdcages and trees have been slowly making their way into the design scene. There will be many more options to come and are fabulous especially if you rent!
