Ladies and Gentlemen,
A notice was recently sent out by the Desert Ridge Community Awareness Committee on some recent acts of vandalism and damage in the community.
I have checked into the reported incidents and very few of these were reported to the Phoenix Police Department, which is not unusual for these types of incidents. These types of criminal nuisance crimes are greatly under reported to law enforcement. They are also very seasonal as they generally occur when children are out of school on winter, spring or summer break.
Residents can assist us in being aware of what is occurring in their neighborhoods by reporting suspicious or illegal activity to Crime Stop or crimes in progress to 911. We do track these crime when they are reported to us but we don’t release them in real time as there are many records management protocols in place for us to report crime to the general public. I do send out crime bulletins if we have a serious public safety threat or a series of crimes that we can connect to a particular individual or group. Random acts of damage by a variety of individuals is difficult for us to send anything out on, so a general crime prevention awareness strategy is best, making everyone aware and having you watch out in your neighborhoods.
Desert Ridge does have an off duty patrol program where uniformed officers patrol the area in a marked police vehicle. This is not a 24/7 operation and has limited hours and the focus is the more serious crimes we see but we will take action on any crime occurring. Many of these acts of vandalism are committed by children living in the area, so parents can help by being aware of their children’s activities and who they are with. They can also help by educating children as to proper respect for other peoples property, curfew, etc.
Please feel free to contact me directly if you have any questions or concerns about this or any other issue.
