Women Who Rock Exhibition
Now – April 20, 2014
Tickets: $7 with museum admission | $10 for exhibition only

Women Who Rock is a groundbreaking and provocative special exhibition created by the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Museum in Cleveland, Ohio, that illustrates the important roles women have played in rock and roll, from its inception through today. This special exhibition of iconic costumes, instruments and artifacts spotlights more than 70 artists.

 

MIMkids Musical Adventures Series
Saturdays, March 1, 15, 22, 29 | 1:30 to 2:30 p.m. – NEW TIME
Tickets: $12 per class or $40 for all four

Pick up your MIMkids Passport and embark on a musical journey with MIMkids Musical Adventures Series, an educational program designed for kids ages 6–10. Participants will discover new cultures by actively participating in music making, creating musical instruments and exploring MIM’s exhibits—with a designated tour guide, of course! Each four-week session focuses on a different continent, giving participants a well-rounded overview of music from around the world and an opportunity to collect MIMkids passport stamps. Carlos Núñez

Carlos Núñez is the unparalleled master of Galicia’s signature musical instrument, the gaita, or Galician bagpipe. He is enormously popular across Spain and throughout Europe and Latin America. Sharon Corr

GRAMMY-nominee and Brit Award Winner Sharon Corr is a singer-songwriter and violinist who is hugely successful both as a member of legendary Irish group the Corrs and as a solo artist. Corr has drawn her influences from the magical songwriting of the late 1960s and early 1970s all the way through to today. In addition to singing, Corr has for two seasons been a coach on the hugely successful talent show “The Voice.”

Arizona Opera presents “VoiceLab”: Amber Wagner, Angela Fout & Allen Perriello
Wednesday, March 5 | 7 p.m.

Two impressive opera heroines take the MIM Music Theater stage for the final 2013-2014 VoiceLab concert. Wagner is a winner of the 2007 Metropolitan Opera National Council Auditions Grand Finals and was featured in the documentary film “The Audition.” Fout has enjoyed success both nationally and abroad with a varied repertoire from the Baroque to Contemporary.

 

Friday Night Unwind
Friday, March 7 | 5 p.m. to 9 p.m.

Guests of all ages are invited to “unwind” during extended museum hours at MIM. Enjoy the science of “Music and Memory” with live-band karaoke, musical memory games and a presentation by Robin Rio, director of the Arizona State University Music Therapy Clinic, for an interactive look at how the brain responds to music.

 

Girls’ Night Out: STEM SOS (Science of Sound) NEW EVENT
Friday, March 7 | 5‒9 p.m.
Tickets: $11 per person

Girl Scouts can tour the MIM Conservation Lab to find out about the science of conservation and use a STEM activity guide for a self-guided tour of MIM. Scouts can also listen to live music, try out some unusual electronic instruments, or get geeky with some hands-on science-of-sound experiments. All Juniors, Cadettes, Seniors, and Ambassadors can enjoy this STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) program. Girl Scout registration includes the MIM Experience patch. Troop registration is encouraged. A ratio of one chaperone to five Girl Scouts is required. Tickets for scheduled tours of the MIM Conservation Lab are distributed on a first-come, first-served basis and are free with program registration. Lab tour tickets will be given out at check-in. Tickets for the Women Who Rock special exhibition are available for an additional fee of $7 upon arrival. With her throaty vibrato and nostalgic, orchestrated pop songs, singer-songwriter Nicole Atkins brings to mind a blend of Roy Orbison, Loretta Lynn and Jenny Lewis. Conceived as a tribute to drummer Billy Higgins, the Sangam trio soars to dazzling creative heights as its members exchange musical ideas rooted in their cultures and traditions. Saxophonist Charles Lloyd is joined by world-renowned percussionists Zakir Hussain and Eric Harland. A classical tabla virtuoso, Hussain is considered a national treasure in his native India and is highly esteemed worldwide. Harland is a multi-GRAMMY nominated drummer and composer who dazzles his audiences and his peers with his inventive style. The Sangam project has taken on an aura of masterwork, fusing subtlety and refinement.

Kyle Eastwood –  NEW EVENT

It has been 15 years since bassist Kyle Eastwood burst onto the jazz scene with his 1998 debut, “From There To Here.” At that moment in his budding career, the press seemed more preoccupied with his paternal lineage (he’s the son of famed actor-director Clint Eastwood) than his music. With his sixth release as a leader, “The View From Here,” he demonstrates a strong command of both electric and upright basses while expanding into more adventurous territory that is informed as much by jazz as it is by world music.

Music and Dementia: Hitting the Right Note

“Music and Dementia” will highlight the power of music to maximize comfort and enhance quality of life for persons with dementia. Dr. Maribeth Gallagher will discuss the role of music in dementia care for patients and caregivers. Frank Thompson of AZ Rhythm Connection will provide a detailed perspective of his experiences in facilitating group music in dementia care. He will illustrate the practical application and positive effects of music and invite all participants to join in an engaging hands-on drumming session.

This musical duo from Hawaii performs hypnotic, liquid guitar runs woven around clear, tenor Hawaiian vocals and immaculate harmonies. HAPA’s self-titled debut album released in 1993 became the biggest selling album by a group or duo in the history of recorded Hawaiian music. The album changed the tide and terminology of music from Hawaii, since it was the first to establish itself outside of the musical category “Hawaiian Music” and be referred to as “World Music.”

 

Curator’s Choice Lecture: Ritual Musical Instruments – The Divination and Healing Arts of Central Africa

Join Manuel Jordán, Chief Curator and Director of Collections, for this short, informal lecture as he highlights the use of a variety of musical instruments in the context of divination and healing among Central African peoples. Jordán will present specific cases to illustrate how music and musical instruments become strategic devices in the process of redressing illness and misfortune. Learn how a diviner and/or healer aims to create order out of disorder and, through the use of divination and musical instruments, has the ability to identify an agent of misfortune and recommend actions toward resolution of afflictions.

Preconceptions of how Bach should be played fly out the window with this wildly talented pianist and 2010 Juilliard graduate. Shinners connects with today’s audiences in a way that has seldom been seen for a classical artist. Shinners can play anything from classical to jazz, from ragtime to Billy Joel. He is an avid performer of his own original music, influenced by Bob Dylan and Jack Kerouac, but it’s his special affection for Bach that drives his career.

Pavlo’s music speaks for itself. Canadian-born of Greek parentage, Pavlo Simtikidis (better known simply as Pavlo) incorporates the world’s most exotic instruments into his classic Mediterranean sound. Composing in a unique style, he combines elements of flamenco, classical and Latin music, accentuated by the presence of the Greek bouzouki. A JUNO Award nominee, Pavlo tours the world with his sizzling show, melodically uniting world instruments while staying true to his distinct Mediterranean guitar signature.
