How to Keep Your Skin Beautiful in Our Unique Arizona Sonoran Desert
Saguaros
Unique to only our Sonoran Desert. Here in Desert Ridge, we are surrounded by many of them, each an amazing plant that can absorb hundreds of pounds of water and store it for months on end. If only our skin could do the same. Each of us who live here in the desert, know hydration is a constant quest for both the inside and outside of our bodies.
I have practiced the constantly evolving art of skincare in Arizona for over 35 years. I can share with you the absolute “must do” list to keep your skin at its best here in Arizona.
Exfoliate
Within my Salon, I offer a wide variety of exfoliating treatments to soften the skin, so the products can work to heal and hydrate. Facial Peels have been performed as long ago as 4000 years ago by the Ancient Egyptians who used soured goats’ milk to smooth and beautify the skin.
Today, in order to remove dead surface skin cells, I use everything from mandelic acid derived from almonds to glycolic acid from sugar cane. Enzyme peels, handmade in Tempe Arizona, consisting of ingredients varying from cherries, cranberries, pomegranates, and the most popular item this time of year, the pumpkin enzyme peel.
Enzymes efficiently resurface and brighten the skin leaving it shiny and ready to absorb the serums and moisturizers much more efficiently. Dermaplaning is a product free method of exfoliation, great for product reactive skin that needs a thorough topical skin cell clearing and removes surface fine hair too.
Hydrate
Next is layered hydration. Think molecular, the smaller the molecules of the product, the closer to the skin. To elaborate, serums are designed to penetrate the surface skin and hold the active products to the cells. Hyaluronic Acid is commonly used in serums to hold many times their weight in water in the skin.
Next are moisturizers which are available in many formulas. The best moisturizers are able to smoothly roll onto the skin and create a layer of hydration for a relatively long time.
Finish with Sunscreen! It is purposely designed to stay on the skin and reflect the UVA and UVB rays as well as create a primer for any finishing foundation which often times are pigmented titanium dioxide creating an added layer of sunscreen.
