Desert Trails Elementary School Establishes Leadership Development Program

What better way to send out the past year and ring in the New Year than with serving others! Desert Trails Elementary School has established a New Honor Society Chapter that celebrates the pillars of scholarship, leadership, service, citizenship, and character.

Phoenix, AZ— Desert Trails Elementary School (DTES) has established a new chapter of the National Elementary Honor Society (NEHS) to recognize their most outstanding fifth and sixth grade students. Desert Trails Elementary School joins elementary schools around the nation in establishing a program to promote excellence in academic achievement, involvement in leadership and offering community service for our student leaders. More than just an honor roll, NEHS engages its members in service activities and leadership development. In addition to helping the school and community, students in the DTES chapter of NEHS will volunteer 15 hours of community service on individual projects of their choice.

The advisors at Desert Trails are Rebekah West Keur and Kim Cox. They helped to supervise the selection of 50 new members, will be leading them throughout the year on community service, and will have the honor of inducting them at a special ceremony at the end of this school year. The chapter meetings are ran by a team of dedicated and honorable students who will lead their peers throughout the year in service learning projects and character building activities. The following students are the DTES NEHS 2015/2016 officers: President, Yazin H., Vice President, Kayla D., Secretary, Grant M., Treasurer, Jack H., and the 5th grade representatives are Aiden B., and Hudson P.; congratulations to these students!

As a chapter, we work together to decide on what programs we would like to participate in to help our community blossom. Our latest projects included: establishing a recycling program for our school, working with the Kids Feeding Kids Campaign, which collected enough to feed over 5,000 kids, and facilitating a successful toy drive for Toys for Tots. Our hope is to sponsor a service learning project every month, to positively affect the community and to teach the students the importance of helping others and create a positive impact while instilling the love of community service.

Desert Trails Elementary School is proud to have this prestigious honor society at our school and is excited to organize service projects and other activities which will support the community throughout the year.

“We started this club not only for our school, but for the community.”
Grant M.

“I think that it is important to have this club because we can help other people.”
Kayla D.
